The sushi couple

Tuesday, December 20th, 2005

This woman deserves him. This man deserves her. And both of them deserves the success they now enjoy. Blessed is their family for they have come a long way.

Here’s what I learnt: For the husband, appreciate your wife and family. For the wife, be supportive of your husband’s endeavours if they’re for the good of the family’s future. Treasure and be there for one another always.

All the best to Khoon Yen, Douglas and their lovely boys, Donovan, Dominic and Donahue. (Hey! the guys’ names all start with ‘D’)

Did you learn anything after reading their story?

What is Sony to you?

Tuesday, October 18th, 2005

I was reading my AWSJ “old”spaper (can’t call it “new”spaper when its dated 26sep05 when I’m reading it in oct05, can you?) and it carried an article which reported Sony’s FY2004 profit/loss.

Know what I saw? …

FY2004 operating profit/loss:

8.8 billion yen : Music
43.3 billion yen : Game
55.5 billion yen : Financial services
63.9 billion yen : Pictures
-34.3 billion yen : Electronics

I grew up with “Sony = Walkman”. Didn’t know that Sony has been diversifying over the years.

CEO Howard Stringer wants to cut 10,000 jobs (7% of Sony’s workforce) and drop unprofitable product lines. Looks like the days of “Sony = Electronics” days might be numbered.

What is Sony to you?

How to sleep less yet remain productive

Sunday, October 16th, 2005

As new parents, my dear and I know how important sleep can be to us, and it is never enough. So when I saw this, I have to blog it:

I’ve been talking to people for a long time about the fact that you can get by on 6 or even 4.5 hours of sleep per day without question. The secret is NOT the amount of sleep, but rather the number itself; a multiple of 90 minutes will change your life.

Leonardo Da Vinci, Thomas Jefferson, and Buckminster Fuller used this *exact* technique. Other great minds likewise used naps to their advantage including Nikola Tesla, Thomas Edison, Napoleon, and Winston Churchhill.

This dude, Glen Rhodes, might just have the answer for many parents.

Who’s this dude? According to his blog, he is a musician and music producer, a Flash game developer with dozens of games for top clients to his name, an author, with over ten books and several magazine articles to his name.

Please let me know if his technique works for you ;)

Grand tour of Adobe office building

Thursday, August 4th, 2005

Just took an online photo-tour of the grand Adobe office building.

I want to visit / work in / own a building that is this beautiful. Why? Because:

  • Can wear smart casuals to work (Actually, I’m doing this already. Hee)
  • Work with 3 or more large 19-inch LCD monitors.
  • Sit on Herman Miller office chair. (Gimme an Aeron or Cella for Christmas, can?)
  • $400,000 spent to rename ‘Marina Bay’ as ‘Marina Bay’

    Monday, August 1st, 2005

There’s no typo in the title.

S$400,000 of good Singapore taxpayers’ money paid to global brand expert, Interbrand, in this exercise.

I can imagine the stunned facial expressions on the authority’s personnel when the ‘brand expert’ submitted their recommendation to them, together with a S$400,000 bill.

Then some poor fellow was ‘arrowed’ to write the official press release and minister’s speech on this ludicrous endeavour. The press went on to published the facts on 22 July 2005.

Is this money well spent? Well, plebeians like us don’t need to know.

Anyway, in response to much public upheaval, the authority wrote in the press on 28 July 2005 stressing that “place branding can help differentiate Singapore from other competitors.”

To which, insightfully reader, Mr Tony Tan Kok Tee, replied in the press on 30 July 2005 asking the authority and its team of ‘brand experts’ “how the generic name ‘Marina Bay’ can be distinctive when there are easily hundreds of marina bays around the world?”.

Should be good amusement to follow the development of this news.

Meanwhile, go be entertained by Mr Brown’s parody published in the press on 29 July 2005. And if you’re not offended by massive overuse of profanities, brace yourself for Rockson Takumi Tan’s blog entry on this.

And life goes on for Singaporeans.

Unpublished “scandals” of ex-NKF CEO TT Durai

    Saturday, July 30th, 2005

Overdosed of NKF/TT Durai saga. But this one’s interesting…

Gathered from hotline callers by a newspaper writer:

  • Durai has 3 mistresses
  • had one woman who earned 7k a month
  • it was true what the papers said about them flying first class
  • they have deep connections which is why they can cover their butt so easily
  • Yikes! Don’t sue! I read it here.

Singapore National Library New & Old

    Saturday, July 30th, 2005

I felt a strange sense of nostalgia as I read about the opening of Singapore National Library’s new building on 22 July 2005, probably because I hardly set foot into the old building. But I guess the fact that I used to visit my neighbourhood library every week in my younger years kind of made the connection somehow.

Thanks to the Internet and my trusty search tool, TurboScout, I dug up some info and pictures about our library that I like to share with you:

    1. Official Web site
    2. Trivials about the new building
    3. Virtual flythrough of new building
    4. Pictures with commentary from the 1st day of opening and some beautiful night scenes (Thanks to blogger, Ivan Chew)
    5. Outside view from level 16(Added 4Aug2005. Tx, LimeDsign)
    6. Pictures of the old building
